Giant Thumbs Up
You see that picture above? You see those poor, frozen bastards? Believe it or not, they aren’t the inmates of some sadistic hand-themed ice prison, they are the residents of Lulea, Sweden. You see, Facebook decided to open a new server hub in their town, and the residents wanted to thank them for the opportunity to host a new server hub in their town.
The 75,000 residents of the city gathered together to break a world record. What world record? The completely awesome and not at all bullshit record of, “Largest Human Image of a Hand on Ice.”
Is it just me or is Guinness slipping a little bit? I mean, are we really rewarding records with prepositional phrases appended to them now? Couldn’t anyone just go through the Guinness book and find a pretty simple record and be the first to do it on ice, or on a building, or on acid? Aren’t we straying into “who are three people who have never been in my kitchen” territory?
The answer to all of those questions is YES.
What can we do about it? The way I see it, we only have two options. We can get mad, get pumped, really do the legwork and put out a record book that competes with Guinness but has none of the asinine records. Or, we can get mildly annoyed and write half-assed blogs about it on the internet.
Clearly, I’ve already made my choice. Where will you stand?
